Primary School Energy Optimization
Loaction: Zografou, Athens, Greece
Year: 2008
Status: Completed
Area: 3,500.00 sq.m.
In collaboration with C. Tessas
This research project involves the low energy design of the 1st and 7th primary schools in Zografou, based on a preliminary architectural study prepared by the Organisation of School Buildings (OSK). The project includes the design and the analytical results of the thermal behaviour, as well as the energy and visual comfort optimisation of the building complex. The architectural design is always taken into account, so that the integration of the proposed solutions gives an integral aesthetic quality, which on one hand relegates to the functional characteristic of the school complex and on the other hand provides optimised energy consumption and visual comfort.
The results of this research study show that with the proposed optimisation a 30% reduction in energy consumption can be achieved, while with the use of photovoltaic panels the balance equation of CO2 emissions is positive – that is, the school complex theoretically does not emmit greenhouse gasses due to its energy generation features.
