ENERGY STUDY FOR THE FALIRO PEER LANDMARK COMPETITION

The competition brief called for the creation of a landmark in the Faliro Bay. Our team focused on the energy design of the landmark. The main concept was that a building situated on the sea should be as autonomous as possible concerning its energy consumption. To this end we proposed the installation of photovoltaic tiles on the peer, as well as part of the roof structure, which provide an average daily energy production of 57 kWh, while the energy calculation for the energy consumption topped at 51.6 kWh.
Concerning heating and ventilation, a geothermal pump uses sea water to minimise energy consumption, while special apertures at the roof of the building house the mechanical ventilation.
Finally, the restaurant openings have been strategically placed, so as to exploit natural lighting both in the winter and the summer periods. Their curved shape and their orientation allow direct sunlight in wintertime, while the roof of the edifice protects the interior spaces from the harsh summer sunlight. In any case, the required illuminance levels are fulfilled throughout the whole interior areas.
